This past week I decided I needed an education kind of day/night. I was reconnecting with my old stomping grounds in Salem, where I used to work for a few years during the summer and off season. It was a lot of fun. You have a double life when you work for the National Park Service.
In Salem, there are two parts to the city, 90% of those people want to see the Witch Hysteria and that small 10% (me) wants to learn about the history of the trade industry. The Friendship (which is this big boat at the Historic Wharf) on Derby Street was one of the first ships to trade with Cuba. Cuba was big for Sugar and Rum. This exhibit at Peabody Essex Museum (PEM, pem.org for more information) is about Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons art of her memory of the sugar plantation, where she use to live in Cuba. This exhibit is called Alchemy of the Soul.
Alchemy means the medieval forerunner of chemistry, based on the supposed transformation of matter. It was concerned particularly with attempts to convert base metals into gold or to find a universal elixir.
- a seemingly magical process of transformation, creation, or combination.
When you go into the exhibits there are two parts to it. One room has her glass blowing structures and the other is her art work.
This exhibit has to do with her interpretation of glass blowing and her plantation living. The glass blowing sculptures she does are AMAZING. They are something unique I have never seen before. She does all her glass blowing in California now.
One of her art pieces was her and the plantation field. She painted this picture with water color and use different textured paper. It was really neat. She incorporated herself in all the pictures as well.
You have to go check out Peabody Essex Museum. You can literally spend hours in this museum with all the art and tons of culture from around the world. Look on their website to check out the Calendar for events (www.pem.org/calendars). You can find kid activities and more. There is something for everyone.
Go and just have fun. I do every time.
The bonus in all this was being able to hang out with my cousin and my mom. They are both the best people I have in my life. Thank you! Love you both so much! xoxo
Hope you are having a good Sunday everyone and the kids are playing in the snow!
See you all soon!
